(Skip this, jump straight to the download section) Version 1.2 is out! The new version 1.2 of InstallFile quickly solves the common problem of replacing or deleting locked files. An overwhelming amount of more than 120 000 have downloaded either version 1.1 or 1.2 and the new version adds enhanced support for Windows 95/98/Me and Windows XP.
You cannot run your favorite application. One of the dlls suddenly has the wrong version number, probably as a result of the installation of another program. After searching the disk and CD-ROMs you find the right version, only to discover the wrong version cannot be replaced. At this point, typically you would reinstall your favorite application, perhaps loosing a lot of customized options. Sounds familiar?
Use InstallFile to replace the wrong version file with the right version file. And it works!
InstallFile moves the file after the operating system is restarted. The system moves the file immediately after AUTOCHK is executed, but before creating any paging files, or loading dynamic link libraries.
InstallField has several positive reviews in magazines and online journals, among others PC-Welt and LockerGnome. The latter writes "InstallFile is simple, small, DEFINITELY effective, and should be a staple on every technician's utility CD".
InstallFile is actually two utilities: A command line utility (installfile.exe) and a windows dialog-based utility (winstallfile.exe). Select the interface you like best, the result will be equivalent.
WInstallFile guides you through the process of replacing the file by presenting dialog where you can brows for the necessary source and destination files.

InstallFile can only be used on NT/2000/XP, if the process is in the context of a user who belongs to the administrator group or the local system account. Make sure the file to be replaced is not read-only.
